In an era where sustainable marine technologies are more crucial than ever, the MATIN project—Marine Technology Innovation Network between Croatia and Norway—stands out as a initiator of innovation and collaboration between stakeholders in Norway and Croatia. Supported by EEA and Norway Grants, MATIN is a created and implemented to foster and expedite advancements in maritime technology through intensive Croatia-Norway cooperation.

The MATIN project is a strategic initiative under the banner of the Digital Innovation Hub Innovamare and Norway’s Ocean Autonomy Cluster (OAC). With a clear focus on developing cutting-edge maritime technologies, the project aims bringing together companies, public sector, local and national government, users from different blue economy sectors and research institutions to work together on integrating and leveraging underwater robotics and sensors to combat marine pollution and enhance ocean/sea sustainability. This initiative not only highlights the shared environmental concerns but also underscores a commitment to the blue economy—vital for both nations’ future economic growth.

Located in the innovative regions of Šibenik and Zadar in Croatia, and Trondheim in Norway, MATIN is perfectly positioned to utilize the extensive maritime research and development capabilities of both countries. The partnership includes prestigious institutions like the University of Zadar and the Institute Ruđer Bošković, alongside leading industry players from the Norwegian maritime cluster. This blend of academic prowess and industrial expertise is set to create fertile ground for groundbreaking innovations.

The project’s overarching goal is to establish a robust framework for collaboration that enhances the capacity and business competencies within the blue economy sectors of both nations. Through activities such as joint research initiatives, co-creation workshops, and direct business-to-business engagements, MATIN aims to foster not only technological advancements but also sustainable commercial opportunities.

One of the standout features of the project is its commitment to further develop existing Living Lab in Šibenik, which will serve as real-time testing grounds for new technologies, mirroring successful models already implemented in Trondheim. These labs will facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology, ensuring that the innovations developed under the MATIN umbrella are not only theoretical but practically applicable and scalable.

With funding secured and a clear path forward, MATIN is making significant contributions to the marine technology sectors of Croatia and Norway. By enhancing the collaborative spirit and innovative capacities of both countries, the project is expected to lead to new technological breakthroughs that could define the future of sustainable marine activities globally.

This initiative not only exemplifies successful international cooperation but also sets a precedent for how countries can come together to address the pressing environmental challenges of our time through technology and innovation.
